Stuff I learned from looking at who’s born on my birthday…

Andie McDowell, Tony Danza, Charles Grodin, Anthony Quinn were all born on April 21st, my birthday. So were Iggy Pop & Robert Smith (from the Cure), then Queen Elizabeth II and Catherine the Great.

Looking at that list, it’s like being lumped in the uncool gang and the cool kids are grouped somewhere. My list looks like a retirement home for the has-been actors and musicians. Either that or matronly queens who remind me of my mother. Why couldn’t I get Conan O’Brien, Jennifer Garner, or even Maria Sharapova, all born just days away from me?

Well, it could be worse. Adolf Hitler was born on April 20th. Missed it just by a day. Phew!

5 things I think Today – April Edition…

1. The funniest thing I’ve seen on Youtube this year. Thanks, Kitt for the link!

2. I’m going APP crazy. You’ve got APPS for everything. Flashlight. Mirror. Dictionary. Language Translations. Games. Kindle. Currency Converter. Licquor Mixology. Astronomy Guide. Facebook. Twitter. Skype. Battery Doctor… and the list goes on… I’ve a small urge to get the Ipad, though I’m happy with my Iphone at the mo… Folks. Welcome to the future. a bit off tangent, but I think the future according to Microsoft would look like Star Wars. The future according to Apple would look like Star Trek. (don’t know if that makes sense)

3. Uploaded more images to my facebook page, and also perhaps some on my Flickr. I’m utterly annoyed at Facebook picture album though. “Upload Failed” a few times. Not sure how well Flickr integrates with FB or my blog site. Got to research on this. Maybe I’ll check out Picasa.

Also, scanned some of the illustrations I did during my trek and placed them in the Illustration page. Also added a Photography section for my best photos in lieu of my budding prosumer career with my D90… time to buy a drybox!

4. a. Movie watch: Shutter Island 8.5/10: The more I think of it, the more I love the movie. Plus, I am hypnotized by the music at the closing credits, Max Richter’s On the Nature of Daylight mixed with Dinah Washington’s This Bitter Earth.

I’ve heard both versions on their own, though I like Richter’s & Dinah’s music on their own, but gelling these 2 songs was genius and adds an extra emotional layer to this music.

b. How to Train Your Dragon in 3D was awright. Didn’t really justify the super-high rating it got on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB. But thought that it was still way superior to other Dreamworks animations like Shrek, Ice Age & Shark Tales. However, the soundtrack by John Powell was really “Powellful”. hehe… saw what I did there? Powerful, Powellful… nevermind…

c. My most highly anticipated movie of the year: Tron Legacy. My bro had his Clash of the Titans which in the end disappointed… hope it isn’t the same for me and this one.

5. Caught up with my Lost episodes finally. And all I can say… awwwwwsheeeyyyat… things are really heating up now… awwwwwyyyyeaaah! Just downloaded SNL & 30 Rock but haven’t watched them yet. And the new South Park episodes are funny as balls (no pun intended as there are lots of scrotum jokes for some reason this season). The Facebook episode was just as classic as the Warcraft one.

And that’s that for now. Later, peeps.

Waiting for the plane…

So there. Airport. Waiting to board. Typing on unwieldy iPhone keypads. Listening to Orbital’s Hallucinogen. This will be the last time I’ll be using my 3G connection here before I take off. Better use it wisely. Tired sleepy and anxious to get some shut eye. Am getting business class because of overbooking. Awesome! Plane seems to be delayed. It’s 7:42 now. Supposed to depart 7 min ago. Testing my Dale (D90! I mean D90. stupid iphone predictive text) while I’m at it. Gosh. It’s tiring. I think I’ll whip it out on those special moments only or I’ll miss out on my holiday experience. Moderation. It’s 7:44 now. Should I risk a quick shut eye? Ok. Hi Nava, my guide, if u can read me, looks like I’ll be a little late. :T

5 Things I Think Today

1. Movies I need to watch before my mountain pilgrimage: Fantastic Mr. Fox, Up In The Air, Where the Wild Things Are, Haunted University, and if I can catch it in the cinemas right before I leave, Alice in Wonderland!

2. Did some shopping and got the Kata 3-in-1 Bag, Tamron 18-270VC lens, 8 Gig SD Card, Spare Nikon D90 Battery, DigitalEye Monopod/Hiking Stick (RM90, much more affordable than the RM545 Gitzo I saw at ShaShinKi), Hoya 72mm Polarizer, Kenko UV Filter, and now, I’m po. Credit card ‘po.

3. Playing Left 4 Dead 2 with my bro = lots of screaming n’ shouting, “HEEELP HEEELP!” “WHERE ARE YOU?” and “I’m dead.”

4. I’m saving up on episodes of Mysterious Universe Podcast for my trip in Nepal. There’s nothing better than listening to a creepy Alien/Ghosts/Cryptozoology show in the dark at a remote area of the world. Got to remember to cache their shownotes in case I’d like to check out those video clips n’ pictures of them alien sightings and ghost images.

5. Someone should come up with a blog for interesting Malaysian number plates seen. And I’m not talking the boring  WBM 1, BBB 888 kind. I’m talking about the more clever ones like JED1 or something like that, those with meaning. So far, I’ve seen MAF14, TV3, PEN15, NAB1, WRG1665 (on a Manchester Utd fan’s car).

Holy sheet. This woke me up after 3 hours only, wide awake… A Dream… Freewriting…

Battle of good and evil…
Impending evil cannot be stopped like the devil. Keep coming how to beat it? No one can. It comes, keeps coming… epic battle… the good keeps thinking of ways, thought it’ll work but no. It works for a while and the evil comes back and kills them. On an astronomy tower, defending, like last stand, then the heroics of the defenders helped to almost defeat the enemy.  So close. All was safe in the end, but someone betrayed from within and evil came and destroyed people one by one.  (sorry, am loose for details at this point as it’s the early part of the dream)

Another episode. Optimus Prime was killed. Ironhide there to protect him but failed.

And so it goes, world to world. Different episodes, where the end is always similar. Different powers, like guns, machines, fight against evil. Then angels(?) the next, try divine faith powers. Even try knowledge, research and brains to find weakness and way to defeat it. But the evil wins.

Then evil comes finally to where the ultimate good is. Where the dream thinks it’s the only thing that can defeat the evil. A young tennagerish girl. People try to sacrifice themselves to protect her and keep her away from the evil. But evil senses her presence and goes for her. One by one killing off people who stands in its way. Evil guy… now called Lucifer is like a fat country accent man, like that dude from Lost that looks like Stacey Keach. Hold his hands as Lucifer strikes down. But ‘I’ held it, as hard as I can. Lucifer’s face has a worried expression. What’s going on? Then with the girl’s help, he’s defeated for good.

There’s a grotto where Optimus lives again…

In the end everyobody lives again, the good guys, the people that died from the previous episodes, they came back and leave earth on a spaceship. The final bastion.
Fly away with the survivors and look back at the dying Earth which burns in a greenish blaze. Come to an island. Heaven? Utopia?
On that hilly island. Blue and multispectrum waters all around and horizon. Where everyone lives again. Divide their new home, choose their spot, sat at the corner, ppl delegated spots, some kid made a joke about hey, sleep here, laugh but they get knocked on the head. Then I keep thinking how Ron Howard (the director) is so talented, then as people are dividing their real estate of the new place, I think of how my spot in Paradise should look over the hill and ocean…. then Ron shows a trick of how he jumps with someone on his shoulder and suddenly lifts back up coz of hot air? Cool stunt. Then I do that to Ron and jump over the water, but water has no hot air so we plunge in the water. The end.

Coming Soon

Went to check out GSC’s website to see if I can do a prebooking for Star Trek. Couldn’t find it. So I went to check out what’s coming soon.

screenhunter_01-may-02-0007

Then I got really frustrated. Why aren’t they showing their upcoming movies? I mean, Terminator Salvation, Star Trek, all that… where they be? Then I looked closely…

screenhunter_02-may-02-00071

Apparently, there’s a Thai movie called “Coming Soon” directed by a Mr. Sopon Sukdapisit. Confirmed it on IMDB. But I mean, whadahelllll? Coming Soon? Why not call it “Coming Attractions” while you’re at it. Or “Reservations”… way to go for confusing people. I wonder if the movies are more successful because people like me are checking out upcoming movies and accidentally coming across this movie… or less so because people are always skipping the Coming Soon, thinking that it’s still coming soon… Coming Soon coming soon to a theatre near you. Heh.

Talk about making the most out of a really bad situation…

Driving to work today, got caught in a pretty bad crawl on the Sprint Highway. Turns out there’s a pretty bad accident involving a Chakri Palace catering truck. Now, this would’ve been a pretty regular accident, but just realised how rather bizarre this particular accident seemed to be. Take a look at the photo:

The thing that struck me was how odd, and rather “convenient” the whole situation looked. Truck flips over (hope driver is okay), but conveniently flips over at a certain angle, proudly displaying ad for Chakri Palace Catering Service, with phone number and all to rubbernecking motorists curious what happened.

What a novel way to advertise your product this way!

What I’m amazed is that someone actually took the effort of printing an ad or message at the TOP of a van where only folks on helicopters and the 2nd – 5th floor of buildings can make out the message.

This seems like a conspiracy I tellz ya! Hmmm… I could probably cater the food from there for my birthday Murder Mystery party… What’s that number again?

From KK Cybercafe…

Thanks to Mel n’ John for putting up with us. Dang it was hot last night and I was basically out of it with only 1 hrs sleep in 2 days. Shouldn’t make it a habit of rushing out deadlines before holidays, pretty much screwed up my first day here. Had massive headache and must’ve acted like a drugged out buffoon throughout, but just had a good night’s sleep and seem okay now. Hope my climb won’t be affected by this recent disregard of health. So we’re off to Mesilau taking a taxi in a bit. RM150 was the best price we could get around Gaya. Coming back, the price Mun Kitt got was about the same so I think that’s pretty much the standard rate here. Waiting till 11 for Kitt & Louise to do their 30 min massage… I’ve 6 min left on the comp here, charging my Ipod, writing my blog, going to CNN, Slate, Goonernews… (don’t dare surf porn on a public comp :O) Well… some thoughts so far:
1. Deep Sea fish is great, especially the one cooked by Anon (cool name), Mel’s cook at her Mango restaurant. Lovely in Thai Red curry n’ coconut sauce…
2. Basil leaves are ok, HOLY Basil leaves rock!
3. Man, I don’t know how Ron Moss can stand it anymore giving advice to people who obviously are on a different planet than the rest of the world on that “One In A Million” talent show. What he said was spot on about that Esther chick being too show offy n’ arrogant, but Malaysians are too polite, easily impressed or just plain obtuse… I think that’s why we’re stuck in the mire in talent. Because we’re too afraid of criticism and too afraid to give it.

4. If I have a dog, I’ll name it Mutt Williams. And he’ll buddy up with Cat Stevens, and I’ll post those cute photos that people can caption to on Icanhascheezburger.com.

5. Oh, and if I’ve another pair, will name them Yipster (goggie) and Nomster (kitteh). Just love the “ster” names. Just sooooo cute.

6. I miss the backpacking life. Poor, living like cockroaches on some far flung part of the world with only the bag on your shoulders and Ipod on your hip… learnin new cultures, seeing new wonders of the world and meetin’ new people. They’re the nomads, the gypsies, the bedouins of not a nation or a region, but of the Earth.
Whoops, five minutes left. Don’t want to leave it too late before I get cut off here. Well, Benjamin Ling, out!

My first spam… *sigh*

Just received my first spam by this appapapf fella, car warrantly bullshit. Nuked his mothaeffin post. If I keep getting more, I’m just gonna have to install Akismet or some other plugin… right now, have been too busy with the Mt. Kinabalu trip to learn how to use it, but then again, I’m a pretty lazy learner.
