Welcome to the future. a bit off tangent, but I think the future according to Microsoft would look like Star Wars. The future according to Apple would look like Star Trek. (don’t know if that makes sense)

3. Uploaded more images to my facebook page, and also perhaps some on my Flickr. I’m utterly annoyed at Facebook picture album though. “Upload Failed” a few times.Not sure how well Flickr integrates with FB or my blog site. Got to research on this. Maybe I’ll check out Picasa.

Also, scanned some of the illustrations I did during my trek and placed them in the Illustration page. Also added a Photography section for my best photos in lieu of my budding prosumer career with my D90… time to buy a drybox!

4. a. Movie watch: Shutter Island 8.5/10: The more I think of it, the more I love the movie. Plus, I am hypnotized by the music at the closing credits, Max Richter’s On the Nature of Daylight mixed with Dinah Washington’s This Bitter Earth.

I’ve heard both versions on their own, though I like Richter’s & Dinah’s music on their own, but gelling these 2 songs was genius and adds an extra emotional layer to this music.

b. How to Train Your Dragon in 3D was awright. Didn’t really justify the super-high rating it got on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB. But thought that it was still way superior to other Dreamworks animations like Shrek, Ice Age & Shark Tales. However, the soundtrack by John Powell was really “Powellful”. hehe… saw what I did there? Powerful, Powellful… nevermind…

c. My most highly anticipated movie of the year: Tron Legacy. My bro had his Clash of the Titans which in the end disappointed… hope it isn’t the same for me and this one.

5. Caught up with my Lost episodes finally. And all I can say… awwwwwsheeeyyyat… things are really heating up now… awwwwwyyyyeaaah! Just downloaded SNL & 30 Rock but haven’t watched them yet. And the new South Park episodes are funny as balls (no pun intended as there are lots of scrotum jokes for some reason this season). The Facebook episode was just as classic as the Warcraft one.

Life in Technicolor II, (I guess Life in Technicolor I was the teaser…), this is hands down my favourite music video of all time. With all the pretentious crap teenagery videos that’s peppering MTV, (on hindsight, I’m actually with Kanye on that Taylor Swift issue, God, she’s annoying…), or mindless oversexed displays of body gyrations (think Shakira’s She Wolf) this was a real breath of fresh air. What other trailer elicits all these adjectives at the same time: funny, nostalgic, beautiful, inspiring, clever, thoughtful, cute, and even… creepy… all at the same time? Check out Puppet Chris Martin’s creepy appearance at 3:45. Chills.

This should be Arsenal’s new pregame stadium song, to rile up the juices, better than the old fogey Elvis Presley’s “Wonder of You”. No wonder the Emirates Stadium seem so quiet. If they’d played this or Viva La Vida, that’ll surely bring the club up. And on a sad note, poor Aaron Ramsey… boy, seeing that injury was heartbreaking, but for some strange reason, I feel like that could be the spur that kicks Arsenal’s sails into second wind. Come on you Gunners! And come on you Emirates Stadium A/V guy, play that Life in Technicolor II song. Make this our anthem!

On that note, on to the reviews… have been bingeing on movies lately, so here they are:

1. Role Models – My friend Kitt asked me to watch this coz one of the characters reminded him of me, and that’s the Dungeons n’ Dragons geek kid. (yeah, right! May Stromgar’s Hammer strike him for spreading these lies!) Overall, it was a really fun movie and I was actually pretty surprised how much airplay the roleplaying aspect got throughout the whole movie. Good juvie fun. 7 out of 10.

2. Yes Man – pretty well done comedy, but pretty darn similar I think to Role Models, in that Carrey & Rudd play really down and depressive blokes with girlfriends that left them because they’re so negative. Also has a little bit of that geeky roleplay element in the movie with the Harry Potter lovin’ Aussie boss. Love the chemistry between him and Zoey Deschanel. They make one of the cutest on screen couples I can think of. Also a solid 7 out of 10 for me.

3. Star Trek – has the best ever opening sequence of any movie I can remember. Never have I cried in the 1st 10 minutes of any movie, and I did! Whatdaheck????? I’m talking about the scene where James T Kirk’s dad sacrificed himself to save his family and crew from the Romulan bad guys. Overall, I thought this was a great movie, not as great as what Dark Knight did to the Batman franchise great, but still classic nonetheless. Felt like it started really awesome and started to plateau somewhat after that. Wasn’t too keen on the characters playing Chekhov, Sulu and Scotty (Simon Pegg’s comedy relief is a little too deliberate, that overdone Russian accent from Yelchin… Yeeelllch! and Cho’s a little awkward in his fight scenes) I really did like what they did to Kirk, Spock and Uhura though.Sorta lukewarm with Karl Urban’s Dr. McCoy though. Felt he was trying to push the comedy button one too many times. But for me, the worst was Michael Giacchino’s soundtrack. Too clangy clash of cymbals jarring, not a hint of a recognizable theme in it until the original score hit the end credits, and then when there was the soft moments, I had LOST flashback literally. The main theme also seemed overly dramatic. Sigh. I would’ve preferred someone like John Powell or maybe George Fenton if they can’t get John Williams. OK, after all that, my score? 8.5 out of 10. Still like it a lot!

4. Gran Torino – Loved this one from Clint Eastwood. Such a modest and underwhelming movie, I mean, an ageing racist Korean Vet, a Hmong community, no big special effects, not much action whatsoever, but the thing is that is the charm of Eastwood’s movies. He can point the lens at anything and anyone who no one cares about, and makes audiences cry over them. 8 out of 10 for me.

And that’s 4 for now… wanted to make it a rounded 5, next one up I think I’m gonna catch is JCVD. But gotta catch up on my work. Well, I’m off. Gotta draw some stuff for Men’s Health Magazine.

Then I got really frustrated. Why aren’t they showing their upcoming movies? I mean, Terminator Salvation, Star Trek, all that… where they be? Then I looked closely…

Apparently, there’s a Thai movie called “Coming Soon” directed by a Mr. Sopon Sukdapisit. Confirmed it on IMDB. But I mean, whadahelllll? Coming Soon? Why not call it “Coming Attractions” while you’re at it. Or “Reservations”… way to go for confusing people. I wonder if the movies are more successful because people like me are checking out upcoming movies and accidentally coming across this movie… or less so because people are always skipping the Coming Soon, thinking that it’s still coming soon… Coming Soon coming soon to a theatre near you. Heh.

… overtaking Star Trek.

Inspired. Got heads up on this from Kevin Smith’s twitter feed and I agree, this may be the best trailer I’ve seen. I vaguely remembered Maurice Sendak’s cartoon, but not much, n’ didn’t think it really had a story. I love the song (Wake Me, by the Arcade Fire), and apparently the version in this movie is a newer version (and much improved) than the original which I took a listen to and thought was generic indie rock and rather forgettable. But man, everything about this trailer brings out the dreamer kid in me. I hope this doesn’t raise my hopes too much for the movie like a trailer did for M Night’s The Lady in the Water (the version with Josh Groban’s Mi Mancherai).

So now my list of must-see movies this year (post Watchmen) goes like:

2. Star Trek (Man, I have goosebumps thinking about how good it can be. Props to Hans Zimmer whose inspiring Batman score really is the perfect scifi trailer music)

3. Avatar (The one by James Cameron scheduled for December release, trailer not out yet. So far, no word on how’s this gonna be like, but knowing Cameron, this is most likely gonna be mindblowing. It would’ve been top if it had a trailer by now)

4. Terminator Salvation (what’s with rock songs in trailers lately? not to complain tho coz it works! Oh, by the way, song is The Day the Earth Went Away by Nine Inch Nails)

5. Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen (I’m kinda ‘ngeeeeeeh’ with the movie and the trailer, seems like generic scifi fare n’ not a fan of Michael Bay who’s the king of Hollywoody. I repeat. Hollywoody. Not Hollywood. Still, can’t wait to watch it.)
